MUSEUM OF AUSTRALIAN DEMOCRACY, CANBERRA.

THE CHALLENGE

The Museum of Australian Democracy (MOAD) is a cornerstone of the Australian educational curriculum. Every year, 70,000 Australian students visit the building in Canberra to learn about the history of democracy in Australia and internationally.

The challenge of this project was to develop an experience that would enable scores of children to move through the building independantly, so they could explore the collection at their own pace while keeping focused on the subject. The activities also needed to appeal to a wide variety of learning styles and thinking strategies - so groups of kids could enjoy learning about democracy together. The museum also asked for an easy-to-use content management system so they could develop new activities and respond to the changing political landscape.

I worked with EDM studios to originate the concept and design the activities for this complex and multi-layered project, producing an award-winning exhibit system.

OUR SOLUTION

A CONNECTED JOURNEY

Before coming to Old Parliament House, teachers can browse the museum’s website to find a TRAIL experience that fits the interests of their students. They can then make an advance reservation using the MOAD website.

Students are welcomed by members from the museum’s education team and introduced to TRAIL. After breaking up into teams of 4 a designated teammember takes charge of the RFID card. The first kiosk they use invites them to choose a unique name and select a visual avatar. This helps students identify which kiosk to go to as they move along their TRAIL.
